Fairfield Nodal

A trouble-free solution for a challenging environment

Challenge

In the seismic industry, the majority of equipment failures in the field are directly related to faulty connectors and cables. Troubleshooting and maintaining these cable systems consumes considerable crew time, slowing production and increasing operational expense.

Fairfield Nodal, a global energy exploration company, needed to adapt its proven, high sensitivity, subsurface imaging device to a new application—self-contained “place and leave” units that enable the company to acquire and record seismic data from remote, difficult-to-access locations including data from units that are buried in the frozen soil of Russia and Alaska. This required replacing the expensive cast metal housing with a durable precision plastic housing able to withstand dense infrastructure, sub-salt, rugged terrain and urban areas.

Though the customer had extensive experience with cast metal, they had none with injection molded plastic.

Solution

HARBEC tool designers and process engineers worked closely with the customer’s engineering team to adapt the housing design to the realities of injection molding, create the necessary mold designs, and specify an engineered resin that met all performance specifications.   Prototype housings were grown using our SLS equipment, enabling our customer to test their integration with other components.  Short production runs of parts were made to confirm key design features and tolerances, and the molds were adjusted accordingly.  As volume production started, HARBEC began working with the customer on design revisions to reduce unit cost.

Result

The customer has entered an entirely new market by deploying its existing technology using a plastic housing that:

  • Reduces troubleshooting and operational expenses
  • Increases production and channel capacity
  • Yields superior images
